Chapter Eight

To the surprise of the people in Amar, Imari landed the dragon in the town square. Then Imari went running down the street, toward where he knew the Dragon King’s family lived. Imari didn’t know Malik per se, but Imari knew that Malik was the youngest descendant of the Dragon King and that Malik carried the blood of a dragon rider within him.

After dropping off Imari, Karl, and Henry, the great brown and red dragon lifted himself up once again and headed back in the direction of its master.

Karl shook his head for a brief moment, then put his hand on Henry’s shoulder. “That sure was something, wasn’t it?”

Henry couldn’t contain his smile. “It sure was. No one at home will believe us. I flew on a real dragon!” He jumped up in the air with a loud holler.

Imari motioned them to walk down the road with him. Flying on a dragon had been an exhilarating experience for him also. As a wizard, he had felt the pulsing of the dragon’s power. He would like to find a quiet place and just enjoy the bliss of the ride, but Imari was pushed on today by the urgent need of the Dragon King: to find and keep safe his last descendant.

After hearing the commotion of the dragon, more people were now outside, earlier in the morning than was usual. Asking for directions a few times, Imari, Karl, and Henry soon came to a group of houses in front of a large field of summer corn.

The largest house sat in front and, like all houses in Mahli, was made of wood. The ridges were high, allowing the winter snows to melt off easier. As they approached the steps to the porch, a man in his forties came out of the door.

Imari gave the man a slight nod, then said, “Sir, the Dragon King asked me to find Malik. Is he here?”

The man’s dark eyebrows furrowed, and his face took on a look of worry. “He spent the night at a friend’s house. He and a group of friends were celebrating his twelfth birthday. Why? Did my grandfather send for him? Is something wrong?” He looked from Imari to Henry and Karl, two foreigners here, then back to Imari again.

“Where is his friend’s home?” Imari asked, pushing forward. “We need to take him to safety.”

“Safety?” the man exclaimed. “You can’t just take him away.”

Imari took a deep breath. “The Dragon King commanded it.”

Conflicting emotions ran across the man’s face. He let out a deep breath, and his face fell. “Very well, then. I will trust the Dragon King.” The man then proceeded to give directions to Imari of where the boy might be.

It took another half hour of walking to get to where Malik’s grandfather had directed them. The house stood, all alone, at the edge of a field on the far outskirts of town. There was a large stable behind the home, and dozens of horses roamed across the field.

Imari approached
